I could have easily been convinced that this was a high quality Sega Genesis title that was released near the end of the console's life.The game has fantastic atmosphere with music to match (one song in particular gave me a serious DOOM vibe). There are plenty of secrets and power ups to find, and there's even a 'true ending' to be unlocked for finding several specific secrets. To help with exploration, there's an in-game map that shows teleport and save rooms. The controls and pace felt a tad sluggish at first, but once I adapted to it (took less than thirty minutes) and found a few upgrades I was movin' and groovin' just fine. The elemental powers are used in a few fun ways, which turned a few areas into what felt like mini-puzzles. Most of the boss fights were an absolute blast and I rarely was irked when I died. The plot is dealt out little by little as you progress through the game, and there were a couple of moments that had me intrigued.The only bug I encountered in this game was where an enemy created floor spikes in an area that was out of bounds instead of under the protagonist.. Honestly, this game feels very bare bones (sorry), and just wasn't fun. The graphics are okay, the animation is minimal, the soundtrack is pretty good. The enemies are dull, and are largely just pallette swaps of previous enemies. The boxing in of the screen space is hugely irritating, and detracts from the immersion in the game. The character's lack of animation really sucks the life out of things too.This is my favourite genre, and I bought After Death at 50% off but still have requested my money back. With competition out there like Axiom Verge and a plethora of others, this just doesn't cut the mustard.. I bought After Death on sale after looking at some Metroidvania style games, and decided on this one solely based on how cool the music was in the trailer.The gameplay is reminiscent of an old SNES classic. There's a huge map to explore, but each area has it's own portals for fast traveling. In total, it probably took me about 6 hours to complete, but I hear that there are two final boss fights. I've only discovered the first one so far.In terms of difficulty, I felt that I struggled more at the beginning of the game. Once you pick up a decent amount of health upgrades, it's not too hard.If you're a fan of these old school Metroidvania titles, I'd recommend this one. The music had me hooked and the feeling of nostalgia was rife throughout. Pretty cool story too.I hope more people check this game out. After Death is a good metroidvania game, but now let’s talk about the story.You play as an undead skeleton that wakes up in a cold wet crypt, with no memory of who he is or where he is, but soon he finds out that he must open a portal and to do that he must fight.Okay what’s there to like about the game, well to start with the bosses are Awesome, they not only look cool and scary there are a lot of them to fight.The music of the game is very good from soft music to heavy metal. The levels are big diverse from a graveyard to a desert, to even a library. The art style is goods it definitely has a nice old school Castlevania feel too it. There was all so no bugs in the game and I liked how you got to save in the game it was very easy. The story was nice and had a good mystery too it, the atmosphere was all so good.The power ups we get after killing the bosses were nice like ice and fire amour, or being able to turn into a skeleton spider.Okay now for what not to like about the game. Well there is no boss rush mode and I would have liked some more power ups or maybe another sub weapon.So in the end this is a good metroidvania game, with great bosses, good music and a nice art style, so I recommend this game to anyone who loves a good metroidvania game.. If Sega had produced a Metroidvania for the Genesis, this is what I imagine it would be like, based on the following criteria: * Skulls and bones everywhere * Screen-filling bosses * Z-80 heavy metal soundtrack * Wooden but passable controlsThis game feels like a very good ROM hack. I enjoyed it for the most part, and would recommend it if you like the genre, and get it on decent sale.Other cool features include: * Varied and detailed environments * Secret stuff to find * Mysterious, if somewhat cliche, "amnesia" plot that is revealed as you go * Enigmatic characters that you interact with from time to time * Did I mention the heavy metal soundtrack? It's really good, and you should go to the composer's bandcamp and buy it (same guy that did Jamestown).
